Researchers at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand have begun making elaborate 3D printed copies of the rare artifacts in their collections and allowing students to use them during class.
The artifacts copied by researchers using 3D printing are mainly from the school's Logie collection. These rare artifacts include Babylonian cuneiforms, ancient Roman cups and vases. They will see the sky in the form of plastic.
According to Terri Elder, co-curator of the museum, this work allows students to feel and touch artifacts (copyes) at close range. Like the Romans hundreds of years ago, these artifacts (copyes) were used in the same way. “When students get these treatments, they become very happy, even if they are just copies, not originals,†Terri Elder said.
Students are very happy to use the 3D printed copies of these artifacts for research, which will leave a deep memory for them. At the same time, it also means that universities and museums can share this information with overseas agencies by taking 3D scans and uploading the data to the network. It's easy for everyday users to print these models at home. “This opens the door to sharing collections with overseas collectors and creates a new possibility. For us, the freight cost of some regional collections is really too high, and we cannot afford this cost.†Terri Elder said .
The 3D printing work was led by senior mechanical engineering instructor Don Clucas. They have saved the text on a skull-shaped tablet. Over time, the dome plate may become more and more difficult to save. "In fact, this is 2D printing, we just piled them up one by one and finally built an object," said Don Clucas.
Kate Tinkler, a student at the University of Canterbury, said it was a great idea. “It’s really different to actually touch these replicas and see the artifacts through the glass. By touching, you can feel its size and weight, and all the tiny details,†Kate Tinkler said.
