Recently, an industrial design student from Philadelphia created a functional 3D printed prosthesis. It is understood that this 3D printed prosthesis was designed by a 30-year-old congenital disabled person. Subsequently, the design of the 23-year-old industrial design student Jackson Gordon and the founder of an industrial design company Armatur, Philadelphia. They want to design this 3D printed prosthesis to be more functional than the average prosthesis without any discomfort.
In fact, ordinary prostheses stick to the skin and cause discomfort. However, Jackson Gordon's design can fully grasp and pick up objects with a new knob mechanism. Unlike other 3D printed prosthetics, Gordon's design does not rely on wrist movements to control finger movement because the person who will receive this prosthesis has no wrist. To overcome this challenge, manufacturers have integrated a simple knob system on their hands that, when rotated, controls the fists to close or open, allowing the object to be grasped.
This 3D printed prosthesis consists of 45 3D printed parts and has many holding springs (14 per finger joint), 7-foot wire and many screws. The overall design and construction process consumed Gordon for about six months and he thought it was an exciting and worthwhile experience. However, it is worth mentioning that this 3D printed prosthetic arm actually costs less than $100, which is much cheaper than most standard prostheses on the market.
Although electric prostheses have many benefits, Gordon said that he does not use electric prosthetics for a reason. “Once the motor is installed in the 3D printing prosthesis, it needs to be programmed. This also means that the prosthesis is not waterproof. As a result, many more expensive components will be produced. This will not reach the point where I first hope to open source. The purpose of low-cost artificial limbs."
Currently, Gordon has uploaded all the files of this 3D printed prosthesis to his website. Although he devoted his whole heart and soul to designing and developing this 3D printed prosthetic limb for six months, he did not use it to make profits. Instead, he provided people with more conveniences. This kind of spirit of making a friend is also worth learning.
