According to a US study, plastic products emit a variety of greenhouse gases through sunlight, which is harmful to the environment.
Researchers at the University of Hawaii tested polycarbonate, acrylic, polyethylene, polyester synthetic fibers and other compounds commonly used in the production of plastic products such as shopping bags and building materials for a period of 212 days. The results show that these compounds release a variety of greenhouse gases such as methane and ethylene when degraded in sunlight.
Previous research has never considered plastics as a source of greenhouse gases.
The researchers say that the "most prolific" of the compounds that release methane and ethylene is polyethylene. It is commonly used in the production of plastic shopping bags and is the world's most synthetic and abandoned synthetic polymer.
