Calculation of open book size for hardcover bookcases

Hardcover books as the highest grade of book binding, its packaging quality directly reflects the overall technical level of the printing plant, and relates to the publishing quality of the publishing house.


The main difference between a hardcover book and a paperback book is that the cover of the book is different. The cover of a paperback book is a soft cover, and the cover of a hardcover book is a hard cover, called a bookcase. Book shells usually consist of three layers of material (also multi-layered). Outer cover is made of coated paper, linen, coating, silk, cotton and other materials. The inner layer is a liner, printed with a solid color, a pattern, or a white liner. The backing paper is nailed together with the book block, which integrates the book block and the book cover. Between the cover and the backing paper is a layer of cardboard with a thickness of 1.5mm to 3.5mm, which is made up of three cardboard pieces. The key to the binding of hardcover books lies in the production of the book shells, and whether or not the size of the materials constituting the book shells is appropriate or not directly affects the quality of the entire book.


Hardcover books are divided into round back hardcover and square back hardcover. Hardcover bookcases are usually 2 to 4mm larger than the book block, and the big part is called the floater. It can play the role of protecting the book block, and it looks beautiful.


The following calculations are made on the dimensions of the hardcover bookcases.


Neutral seam: refers to the distance between the cardboard of the back cover and the medium-diameter cardboard when the book case is unfolded flat (commonly known as the fire line position). After the book block is placed on the shell, the middle seam position is used to press the book slot, which is beautiful and easy to read, strong and durable. This size is too large, so that the book slot is not obvious, the shell surface is not compact, floating mouth size increases; size is too small, the seal of the bookcase slot crack burst. This size is generally 7 ~ 10mm, according to the experience of circular endorsement is generally 8mm, square endorsement to take 10mm is more appropriate (when the cover board thickness is less than 2.8mm, the square back end of the book size can be 9.5mm).


Middle diameter: It refers to the distance between the cover and the back cover board when the book shell is laid flat. It contains two middle seams. When the shell is a round back, the mid-width of the circle is the length of the arc of the circle and the width of the two slots; when the case is a square back, the width of the middle is the width of the book plus two widths of the middle slots; if it is a square back, The width is the width of the back of the book plus the width of the two seams plus the thickness of the two cover sheets.


Medium-diameter cardboard: In the middle position of the middle diameter (back position of the book), there is a piece of cardboard called medium-sized cardboard (commonly known as the center strip). Square back hardcover book, medium-diameter paperboard is the thickness of the book block; if the bookcase is a square back ridge, the width of the medium-diameter paperboard is equal to the thickness of the book block plus two cover board thicknesses minus 0.5mm; The width of the cardboard is the length of the book back arc. As the actual production is often the core of the book block is also installed at the same time, the arc length of the back of the book cannot be calculated and measured. Therefore, we have come up with a simple approximate calculation method, that is, the length of the back of the book is approximately equal to the thickness of the book block plus 6.5 mm, and the book shell processed according to this data completely meets the quality requirements. The width of medium-diameter cardboard must be strictly measured. The size is small, the book block is not put into the book shell; the size is big, the upper book block and the book block are not connected firmly, and the writing is not smooth. The length of the medium-diameter cardboard, the endorsement of the circle and the endorsement of the square, are equal to the height of the book block plus two fluttering sizes.


Cover board: cover board before and after the two, the same size. In terms of length, the circle endorsement is the same as the square endorsement, which is equal to the height of the book block plus two fluttering sizes. In terms of width, the circular endorsement is different from the square endorsement. The width of the square endorsed cardboard is equal to the width of the book block minus 3.5 mm, and the width of the round endorsed cardboard is equal to the width of the book block minus 4.5 mm. According to the process and design requirements, the thickness of the medium-diameter cardboard and the cover board is not necessarily the same. The circular endorsed book should be rounded, the medium diameter paperboard should be thin, generally about 0.5mm, and the front and rear cover paperboard should be 1.5-3.5mm thick. The thickness of the medium-diameter cardboard in the endorsement case is equal to or less than the thickness of the cover board, which is generally determined in accordance with the following principles:

When the cardboard is opened, it must be opened in the direction of the grain, that is, the length of the cardboard (book height) is the same as the direction of the cardboard pattern. If it is not along the grain, the medium-diameter cardboard is easy to break, and the appearance and quality of the book surface are affected by the damp deformation of the surface board.


After the cardboard is fixed on the cover material, the four sides of the cover are to be wrapped. The width of the wrapping is generally 12 to 16 mm. Considering the thickness of the cardboard, the thickness is generally increased by 17 mm on all sides. The position of the cardboard on the cover tree must be accurate when the shell is made, and the four sides are parallel to each other.


An example is given below to illustrate the method for calculating the dimensions of each part. A hardcover book is a large 16-copy book with a 297mm high book block, a 210mm wide book block, a 20mm thick book block, and a 3mm thick cardboard cover. Floating port: Round endorsement and square endorsement equal to 3mm.


Medium diameter cardboard:


Round back board length = book block height + flap opening × 2 = 297 + 3 × 2 = 303mm


Square back board length = book block height + flutter opening × 2 = 297 + 3 × 2 = 303mm


Round back board width = book core +6.5=20+6.5=26.5mm


Square back board width = book block thickness = 20mm


Square back ridge board width = book block thickness + cover board thickness × 2-0.5 = 20 + 3 × 2-0.5 = 25.5mm


In the seam:


Round back 8mm


Square back 10mm


Cover board:


Round back board length = book block height + flap opening × 2 = 297 + 3 × 2 = 303mm


Square back board length = book block height + flutter opening × 2 = 297 + 3 × 2 = 303mm


Round back board width = book block width -4.5=210-4.5=205.5mm


Square back board width = book block width -3.5=210-3.5=206.5mm


Book cover material size:


Round back length = (coverboard width + seam width) × 2+ medium diameter cardboard width + edging × 2 = (205.5 + 8) × 2 + 26.5 + 17 × 2 = 487.5mm


Round back width = book block height + fluttering mouth × 2+ edging × 2 = 297 + 3 × 2 + 17 × 2 = 337 mm


Square back ridge length = (coverboard width + gusset) × 2+ medium diameter board width + edging × 2 = (206.5 + 10) × 2+25.5 + 17 × 2 = 492.5mm


Side back false ridge width = book block height + floating mouth × 2+ wrapping edge × 2 = 297 + 3 × 2 + 17 × 2 = 337mm
