Sumitomo Chemical Develops New Process for Producing Liquid Crystal Polymers

The new process can produce high-performance liquid crystal polymers and can increase production efficiency. Sumitomo Chemical Co. stated that they will actively communicate with customers to apply the new LCP production process to the SUMIKASUPER LCP production line as soon as possible.
Compared with the traditional production process, the new process uses an organic substrate catalyst, which significantly increases the degree of reaction between the monomers of the reactants and improves the reaction efficiency. In addition, it greatly limits the occurrence of undesirable side reactions. . At the same time, as the polymerization temperature increases, the organic catalyst and byproducts are separated from the reaction system and are not present in the liquid crystal polymer. Due to the high activity of the new process catalyst, the reaction can be ensured to proceed rapidly, and the reaction efficiency can be improved. If this new process is adopted, Sumitomo Chemical's production capacity of the liquid crystal polymer production facility in Ehime, Japan will be doubled to 4,000 tons per year, and the retrofit of the unit will only require a small amount of money to install the new catalyst feed unit.
The production of liquid crystal polymers using the new process also has some excellent properties compared to the products produced by traditional processes, such as good fluidity on the basis of maintaining high heat resistance, and production of products containing low molecular weight polymerization Less material, better thermal stability in the molding process, significantly lower bubbles during the soldering process, and also improved tonal (white) performance of the products produced by the new process.
An important use of liquid crystal polymers is the production of surface connectors, which are smaller and smaller and the connection performance requirements are higher and higher. Therefore, liquid crystal polymers are required to have good fluidity and thermal stability in the molding process. Sumitomo Chemical's major customers have applied tests on new products and the test has achieved satisfactory results.
