The research team led by Dr. Hossam Heck at the Institute of Nanotechnology, School of Chemical Engineering, Haifa University of Science and Technology, Israel developed an electronic nose that can detect early cancer. Clinical trials have shown that this electronic nose can accurately detect the types and locations of four types of cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer, and can also distinguish between cancer patients and healthy people.
Scientists developed this electronic nose by imitating the dog's olfactory function. The study found that dogs have the ability to distinguish between malignant tumor molecules. When cancerous molecules reach the lungs from the patient's blood and are exhaled out of the body, the dog can detect early cancer by "sniffing" the patient's exhaled gas. This artificial electronic nose is manufactured based on this principle, it is actually a nano sensor that is very similar to the dog's olfactory organ.
A total of 177 volunteers aged 20 to 35 participated in the test, including healthy people and cancer patients. Researchers use this electronic nose to detect the gas they exhale, and then the detection data is processed by advanced algorithmic language. The results show that the electronic nose can accurately distinguish between cancer types and patients and healthy people with an accuracy rate of 92%.
Dr. Heck said that the four types of cancer mentioned above account for almost half of fatal cancers and pose a great threat to human health. The nano-sensor they developed has the ability to detect trace chemical substances in tumors, which can be used not only to detect early cancer, but also to monitor the treatment of patients. Using this technology, it is possible to develop a cheap portable early cancer diagnosis device in the future.
