The principle classification and advantages of network printers (Part 1)

The concept of "network printing" was actually proposed by Hewlett-Packard 10 years ago, and they also started the initial development of network printers. However, due to the high price of the first generation network printers at that time, before the 21st century, China's network printing market did not really flourish.

But with the development and popularization of network technology in recent years, the figure of the network can be said to be everywhere. Not only are traditional printers plugged into the wings of the network to be more fully utilized, but also network printers that have sprung up are emerging. Especially in recent years, with the reduction of its price and the popularization of enterprise LANs, network printers have stepped into various enterprises and institutions and become one of the indispensable members of office equipment.

After all, network printing is a new technology that has only appeared in recent years, and many people have only a superficial impression of network printing. For this reason, I will briefly introduce the market group, principles, classification and advantages of network printers to everyone. Leave a preliminary impression.

Market Group and Market Role of Network Printing

According to the different requirements of network printing work, the current domestic small and medium-sized office users can be divided into two categories. The first category is an office environment with less than 20 PCs. Considering the overall performance level of office equipment, it is most practical to use network printers flexibly at a more affordable price to improve work efficiency. The second category is users who work at the department level. While achieving high-speed, high-quality printing, it is also crucial to reduce the total cost of ownership based on the nature and workload of daily processing.

The advantage of the dot matrix printer is that it is suitable for some special industries in China, such as telecommunications, finance, transportation and other fields, and the requirements for print media are not high. The advantage of inkjet printers is to obtain color output at a relatively low price, which is constantly accepted by home users. But as an output device for office use, laser printers undoubtedly have great advantages. From the perspective of technology and market prospects, the location of laser printers is irreplaceable. In addition, in order to protect the office working environment, the low noise and low pollution of laser printers are also advocated by green offices.

The principle and classification of network printing

There are currently three main ways to implement network printing services on the market: host printing, external printing server and built-in printing server. In addition, network printing through wireless printing server is also emerging.

Host printing implementation

This is the print server method we use the most. Its working principle is to configure a PC directly connected to the printer as a print server. The printer is set as a shared device so that users on the network can connect to the computer To share the computer's printing device. Obviously, this print server is served by a computer directly connected to the printer.

Sharing printing via PC is the most basic level of network printing. Network printing is not a simple "share a printer", the use of PC to achieve sharing is actually not a real network printing. Although in the initial application environment, shared printing is the most widely used method for network printing, and this traditional method is still used in many environments, but this method has many disadvantages.

Through external print server

The external print server is to make the built-in print server alone into a device. Each of these external print server devices has one (or more than one) network interface for connecting to the network, and also provides one (or one Above) printer interface, some of these interfaces are parallel interface LTP, and some are USB interface. Through these interfaces, the printer can be connected to this external print server, so that the network printer can also be used as a network node, and network users can directly access without passing through any computer (as shown in Figure 1).

The external server has strong compatibility. Because its interface is universal, a print server is basically suitable for all brands of network printers. This type of print server technology is also less difficult. Currently, there are many brands (some even not originally printer brands) that have started the development of external print servers. Moreover, the method of using peripheral print servers to achieve network printing is still popular, which is mainly due to its good compatibility and low price. The external print server is much cheaper than the built-in print server, and it is more flexible to use. However, its performance is not as good as the built-in print server. In large and medium-sized enterprises, the built-in print server is still mainly used. With the continuous development of technology and the improvement of its versatility, external print servers will be more suitable for low-end network printing environments.

Through the built-in print server

When office users put higher and higher requirements on the network transmission speed, a network laser printer with a built-in network card came into being. The network printer with a built-in network card is directly connected to the network through the network card. Its data transmission speed is very fast and can be consistent with the network, reaching 10Mb or even 100Mb per second. Generally, high-speed network printers use this method to achieve network printing. This network card used in the printer is called the built-in print server (as shown in Figure 2). The built-in print server can be directly inserted into the I / O slot of the printer's motherboard. Through the network interface on this interface card, the printer can be directly connected to the network node. Users on the network can directly access the network printer without having to Through the computer.

Through wireless print server

At present, there is a new type of print server, that is a wireless print server. This kind of wireless print server also has a distinction between internal and external. Their structure is of course similar to the corresponding internal or external print server, but it adds a wireless connection function, which does not need a cable to connect the print server to the printer, which is convenient for the printer. Moving, also saves the trouble of wiring (as shown in Figure 3). The most common wireless printing is connected via infrared. In addition to laptops, handhelds and handheld computers, many devices including mobile phones, electronic notebooks, portable scanners and digital cameras have infrared transmission ports, which means that This kind of connection can realize the print output of more common mobile devices.
